AIMES are always pleased to support Data Centres North and Projects Director Michael Walker was invited to speak on the opening morning of the 2018 event. Talking on the topic of ‘Empty Space, the Final Frontier’ (and with no apologies whatsoever to James T Kirk) Michael’s talk was focussed on how to fill data centres outside of the ‘London hub’. It was warmly welcomed by operator delegates as representing views closely aligned to their own, based on shared experiences of the marketplace outside the capital, and it provoked a lively debate. Data Centres North was well attended and, as usual, the evening dinner was a triumph. Michael was keen to point out that, despite the number of delegates and the distance some had travelled, he was certain that the event is still only attracting a relatively small fraction of operators and suppliers North of Birmingham. He argues that, as an industry, we complain (frequently around the time of Data Centre World) that too many events are held in London, and believes that Data Centres North could be even better if it more of the wider regions data centre specialists actually voted with their feet and took part. Michael commented; ‘Data Centres North gives us the opportunity to cost effectively showcase capacity and technical excellence outside of the South East. It isn’t a ‘London Scale’ event but it could be become a highly worthwhile professional development, sales and networking occasion –but only if more of us actually sign up and go’. AIMES would like to thank Hugh and his team for the invitation to another well organised event.
